New Well Data Coverage: Louisiana, Illinois, Mississippi, West Virginia, and Manitoba

Well data coverage expands into four more U.S. states and a new Canadian province, with daily refreshes across the U.S. additions.

A well record is only as good as the day it was pulled. A crew rolling out to a location on a record that has not been touched in three weeks is working from a permit that may have been amended, an operator name that may have changed hands, and a surface location that may have been corrected after the fact. The route is fine. The destination is stale.

Today we are expanding Oilfield Route's well data coverage into Louisiana, Illinois, Mississippi, and West Virginia in the United States, and Manitoba in Canada. That brings the app to 17 supported U.S. states and 4 Canadian provinces.

What is now available

Each new region ships with the same workflow crews already use elsewhere in the app: search by well name, API or UWI, locate by land description, confirm the surface location, and route to it offline once the regional map package has been downloaded.

  • Louisiana — statewide well coverage, searchable by API.
  • Illinois — statewide well coverage, searchable by API.
  • Mississippi — statewide well coverage, closing the loop on the region flagged as planned in our launch bulletin.
  • West Virginia — statewide well coverage across the state's producing counties.
  • Manitoba — province-wide well coverage, searchable by UWI and DLS land description alongside Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Well data is included on both Essential and Pro plans. Offline navigation and vehicle-optimized routing remain Pro features.

The part that actually matters: refresh cadence

Coverage is the headline. Cadence is the difference.

Well data for Louisiana, Illinois, Mississippi, and West Virginia refreshes daily. New permits, status changes, operator transfers, and surface location corrections land in the app within a day of appearing at the source.

Most well data products serving the U.S. market run on a monthly refresh. That is a defensible engineering choice, and for some operations it might be adequate. For a crew being dispatched tomorrow morning, it is not. On a monthly cycle, a permit issued on the 3rd may not reach the field until the 1st of the following month. A well that changed operators, changed status, or had its surface coordinates corrected mid-month is invisible until the next drop.

The practical gap looks like this:

  • A new permit can be up to 30 days old before it appears on a monthly cycle. On a daily cycle it appears the next day.
  • An operator change can leave dispatch calling the wrong company for gate access and site contacts for most of a month.
  • A corrected surface location is the expensive one. A crew routed to a superseded coordinate burns the drive out, the drive back, and the service window in between.

None of that shows up as a line item. It shows up as non-productive time, which is exactly the cost we wrote about in The Hidden Cost of Non-Productive Time.

A monthly refresh means the field is always working from a snapshot. A daily refresh means the field is working from the record.

Why Manitoba is monthly

Manitoba runs on a monthly refresh, and that is deliberate rather than a limitation of the app.

Manitoba's petroleum well data is distributed by the province as a periodic licensed dataset rather than a continuously published feed. There is no daily source to pull from. A monthly cycle matches the release rhythm of the underlying data, which means the app stays aligned with the province's own record instead of implying a freshness the source does not provide.

We would rather tell you exactly how current each region is than quietly average it out. Where the source publishes daily, we refresh daily. Where it does not, we say so.

What crews should do next

If you work in any of the new regions, the setup is the same as any other operating area.

  • Update the app to the current release on iOS or Android.
  • Download the regional map package for the new state or province over Wi-Fi before heading out.
  • Search the way dispatch sends it — API or well name in the U.S., UWI or DLS description in Canada.
  • Confirm the surface location before the trip starts, especially on wells where the legal description and the physical access point differ.
